Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI): The objective of the EITI is to improve the transparency around the generation and spending of revenues from the extractive sector so as to improve development outcomes, reduce the potential for corruption or large-scale embezzlement of funds by host governments; and to stimulate debate about the uses to which these revenues are put. The EITI is a multi-stakeholder process involving developed and developing country governments, the international financial institutions, non-governmental organizations and a group of significant investors.

Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA): The IRMA was a network of mining companies, retailers, industry associations and NGOs with the mission to develop a voluntary system to independently verify compliance with environmental, human rights and social standards for mining. Main goal of the network was the fair and equitable distribution of benefits to communities, including tribes and first communities. Founded in 2006, IRMA had a one year mandate, ending in July 2007, to create a set of standards and a verification system. To ensure coordination and avoid duplication, the Council for Responsible Jewellery Practices and the ICMM were part of IRMA’s network.

Natural Resource Charter

The Natural Resource Charter is a set of principles for governments and societies on how to use the opportunities created by natural resources effectively.

United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment

There is a growing view among investment professionals that environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) issues can affect the performance of investment portfolios. Investors fulfilling their fiduciary (or equivalent) duty therefore need to give appropriate consideration to these issues, but to date have lacked a framework for doing so. The Principles for Responsible Investment provide this framework. The Principles are voluntary and aspirational. They are not prescriptive, but instead provide a menu of possible actions for incorporating ESG issues into mainstream investment decision-making and ownership practices.
